SEO Fundamentals #1: How to Do Keyword Research for eCommerce

Keywords, often referred to as search queries, can break or make your SEO campaign. In fact, good keywords can help create compelling content, draw in backlinks, and even boost organic traffic. So how can you improve your keyword research?

3 Steps to eCommerce Keyword Research

Keyword research refers to the process of finding terms that people enter into search engines when looking for certain products or services, so you can strategically include them in your content. Here are three steps that will help you effectively carry out this process:

  1. Write down all the keywords you can think of

Begin by brainstorming and writing down all the keywords that you associate with your products. If you are selling dog supplies, try to put yourself in the dog owner’s shoes, and ask yourself:

  • What does my dog need?
  • What am I searching/looking for?
  • What problems am I having? Which products can fix them?

Answering these questions can help you get started. Once you have a decent number of seed keywords, you can move on to the next step.

  1. Search your keywords on Google

The next step is to test and understand the search query. Head to Google and enter your keywords.

The first thing you will notice is that Google is trying to predict what you are searching for. How does it do this? Based on other users’ search behaviors. Write all of them down.

On the SERP (search engine result page), we want to look at two sections: First, the “people also ask” box, which is full of keyword ideas and topics you might want to target. These are common questions people have around this particular topic.

Second, we want to analyze what type of content is already ranking organically.

Write next to every keyword what type of content is currently ranking. It will save you a lot of time when you start creating your own content.

  1. Find the search volume and keyword difficulty

For this step, use SEO checker tools like CanIRank to help you. Log into your dashboard and head to the “Grow my Content” tab. Then, enter all the keywords you want to analyze and make sure to add a keyword per line. Once you are done, just hit the “Can I Rank?” button.

This tool will analyze all of your keywords and create a report for each. It will give you the search volume, CPC, monthly value, competitors, and ranking probability.

With this information, you can now start comparing all your ideas and pick the ones that best suit your needs. Start with easier keywords that have a +75 ranking probability and long-tail keywords with decent search volume that have more than 300 searches per month.
